CS 1.6 GunGame — The Weapon Ladder Mode
How GunGame works in Counter-Strike 1.6 — kill someone, level up to the next weapon, first to knife wins. Full ladder, maps, and the DM overlay variant.
Updated: 2026-07-30
GunGame (GG) is a simple, addictive Counter-Strike 1.6 mode: every kill promotes you to the next weapon on a fixed ladder. You start with a pistol; the guy at level 30 is on the knife; first to knife-kill someone wins the round.
There's no economy, no buy menu, no round system in the classic sense — just a 30-level weapon race with instant respawns.
The plugin
The reference GunGame plugin for CS 1.6 is an AMX Mod X plugin by community author Kanagawa and others. Multiple versions exist — search "GunGame" on forums.alliedmods.net for actively-maintained forks. The core mechanics have been consistent since ~2005.
The standard weapon ladder
A typical GG progression (server-configurable — varies):
| Level | Weapon |
|---|---|
| 1 | Deagle |
| 2 | USP |
| 3 | Glock |
| 4 | P228 |
| 5 | Five-Seven |
| 6 | Dual Elites |
| 7 | MP5 |
| 8 | TMP |
| 9 | MAC-10 |
| 10 | UMP |
| 11 | P90 |
| 12 | M3 (shotgun) |
| 13 | XM1014 |
| 14 | Galil |
| 15 | FAMAS |
| 16 | AK-47 |
| 17 | M4A1 |
| 18 | AUG |
| 19 | SG 552 |
| 20 | Scout |
| 21 | SG 550 |
| 22 | G3SG1 |
| 23 | AWP |
| 24 | M249 |
| 25-29 | Grenades (HE, flash, smoke) |
| 30 | Knife |
Order varies by server. Some go pistols → SMGs → shotguns → rifles → snipers → knife. Others intersperse for pacing.
Rules
- Instant respawn on death (usually 2-5 seconds)
- No economy — you don't buy anything, weapons are given
- Level down on suicide — accidentally kill yourself, drop one weapon tier
- Level down on team kill — friendly fire = demotion
- Grenade kills earn extra level on some servers
- First to knife-kill wins the round — game restarts
Round win / match end
There's no traditional round timer. First player to complete the ladder AND knife-kill someone wins. Servers usually run 15-30 minute maps then rotate.
Some servers add:
- Round timer as backup — if no one wins by knife in X minutes, highest level wins
- Score board — track wins across a session
Variants
Turbo GunGame
- Any damage — not just kill — promotes you
- Much faster ladder progression
- Server chaos level: extreme
DM GunGame (GG + Deathmatch)
- CSDM instant-respawn overlay
- Weapon menu removed (weapons come from GG ladder)
- The dominant variant on modern non-Steam servers
Team GG
- 5v5 rounds with per-team level progression
- Round-based instead of continuous
- Rare compared to solo GG
Reverse GG
- Ladder runs backward (knife first, Deagle last)
- Novelty
Popular GunGame maps
Small arena maps are the standard — the ladder progresses too fast for big competitive maps.
- fy_iceworld — the beginner favourite; small icy arena
- fy_snow — snowy variant of iceworld
- fy_pool_day — small pool arena, close combat
- aim_ak-colt — 1v1 aim map, works fine for 6-10 GG
- 35hp_2 — everyone starts with 35 HP, one-shot deaths
- awp_map — sparse cover, long sightlines
- de_dust2 — some servers rotate to bigger maps for variety, though the ladder pacing suffers
Why it's popular
- Skill development — you use every weapon in the game every session. Great for practising your weakest guns.
- Anti-camping — you can't hide with the level-30 knife guy hunting you.
- Novice-friendly — no economy learning curve, no map callouts required.
- Session variety — no two sessions play out the same because ladder progress is aim-dependent.
Common strategy quirks
- Level 24 M249 — the machine gun is the hardest level for many players due to its movement penalty
- Grenade levels (25-29) — the tightest race window; whoever nails a HE frag first pulls ahead
- Knife rush — when a player hits level 30 (knife), everyone else knows to hide
- Late-game camping — near the end, low-level players sometimes camp with rifles to prevent the leader from finishing
Server settings that matter
gg_warmup_time— no-kill warmup period at server startgg_max_level— how many ladder tiers (typically 30)gg_knife_level— which level is the knife (usually last)gg_grenade_bonus— bonus levels for grenade killsgg_ffa— free-for-all (no teams) yes/no
